NightCAP for GSC's Hornet Korea, by Rob Hight 8/98

BRIEFING

ID: NightCAP
OBJECTIVE: Protect 2 of 3 F117 Nighthawks
DEPART: Seoul International Airport
TIME: 05:30 (More Difficult Alternate Start Time 18:10)
COND: Haze
DEST: Race-track CAP station entered at Waypoint 2
LOADOUT: CAP plus 2 HARM

RETURN: Chuncheon Airbase (CNN on CPL Autopilot mode)

MISSION:

In preparation for an offensive against the enemy's southern airbases, you are to
fly a race-track CAP at the FEBA, in support of a group of three Nighthawks as
they attack the enemy's Solar Power Plant.

Your mission will be to fly as wingman to Hornet2's lead. Depart from Seoul Int'l
and form up in right echelon position to your lead, flying at 280 KIAS (83% Throttle).
Tighten formation and engage XSEL Autopilot (A/P) as you near Waypoint 1 (WP1).
When your lead cycles his A/P to WP2 and begins a starboard turn, do likewise.
This will line you up perpendicular to the race-track CAP pattern that you will
enter at WP2 (the CAP station). Adjust throttle to maintain 280 KIAS throughout
the pattern. When your lead cycles his A/P to WP3 and begins turning to port,
cycle yours and begin a starboard turn to the south. The race-track pattern is
from WP3 to WP4. Waypoint Cycle 0.5 nm before reaching each WP. At WP4 methodically
cycle through WP0, WP1 and WP2 to return to WP3.

On the inbound leg (northbound from WP3 to WP4, towards the target) scan for threats,
you should be aware of Hornet2 on radar flying the outbound leg towards you. The
three F117s will commence a three-pronged attack at ET 11:00 minutes, then rejoin
near WP4 at ET 14:00 minutes for the return to Chuncheon Airbase; you will not pick
them up on radar, but try to maintain spatial awareness of their approximate location.
Your orders are to wait for Hornet2 to call "Talley ho", or "Spike" before beginning
engagement, as it will be unclear whether scrambling fighters are on routine patrol
or on intercept. When you hear Hornet2's call, the lead will pass to you; continue on
as a "loose deuce". First engage any fighters attacking you, and then any attacking
your leader/wingman. All the while, be aware of any threats arising to the Nighthawks.
Try to maintain a defensive position along a line between WP4 (due south of the Power Plant)
to Chuncheon Airbase. Because of the Nighthawks' Stealth Technology, the enemy fighters will
need to approach within 5 nm before detecting them. This gives you a longer reach in
defending them. The Nighthawks will reach the Chuncheon landing pattern by ET 17:00 minutes.

Hornet 3 and Hornet 4 will being flying a CAP to your west. Do not call on them before
they become engaged, as their mission is to cover your west flank as you proceed to the
east covering the Nighthawks' retreat. If and when they become engaged, you may assist
them, or call on their assistance.

A F16C will fly SEAD concurrent with the F117 attack. Try to be aware of whether he
completes his mission successfully. If he runs into trouble you may have to take up
where he left off, and eliminate any remaining SAM threats. After completing his SEAD
mission, he will return to Chuncheon to reinforce the base defenses.

Chuncheon Airbase is defended by two strategically located SAM sites, and Gunboats patrol
the river by the base. Either could become bogie traps if used wisely.

Expect the unexpected. Errant patrols are known to frequent the area, and an elite
commando unit is known to be based at Hyon Ni Airbase. Patrol area around Chuncheon
until all of the Nighthawks have landed, which should be by ET 30:00 minutes.
